The mentor couple's truth: "It's one of the most beautiful compensations in life – that no one can sincerely try to help another without helping oneself."  - Ralph Waldo Emerson
There isn't a session at this conference that wouldn't benefit lay mentor educators
including ALL 23 keynotes, ALL 35 pre and post conference training Institutes, and especially the
TOOB ("teach right out of the box") programs – all of which are perfect for mentors to teach in
their congregations and communities. While lay educators are warmly encouraged to attend
any and all sessions, especially the Training Institutes which we won't list because we'd just
list all of them as "ideal for mentor/lay educators" we'll list below some of the breakour workshop
sessions that are more targeted at creating mentor-led church or community based marriage ministries or the courses that might better lend themselves to that application - sessions that might be of the most
practical interest to mentor/lay educators.
Also note that marriage education courses are more effective (and more fun!) when taught by couples
so bring your spouse and get trained together.
And, if you're hoping to create a marriage ministry in your church, expand the
team - try to bring five or six couples.  That way you can fan out and cover all the bases (and take
advantage of the group & couples discounts) and have a support group when you return home.
Team members can specialize – get trained as instructors in a range of marriage education
programs for dating, premarital, newlyweds, new parents, couples in trouble and on
the brink of divorce, stepfamiies, youth, fathering, parenting, low-income, ethnic, etc.
You'll return home prepared to teach a dozen programs to couples at any stage. Be sure to
check out the pre and post conference Training Institutes and the TOOB programs.

If you bring a team you have the luxury assigning some to focus on the "how to" workshops –
the nuts and bolts of organizing and sustaining a mentor-led, church-based marriage-ministry
– mentor recruitment and training, marketing and retention, grant writing & funding, research
and evaluation, domestic violence guidelines, outreach to youth marriage education, health
care settings, & prison ministries, etc.
No matter how many you bring, be sure to take advantage of the wonderful networking opportunities
to talk with those that have been there, done that - who will generously
share what has, and has not, worked in their own church/community-based marriage ministries.
Do not miss the many NETWORKING opportunities - the Morning Roundtables Fri, Sat, Sun
(the Marriage Ministries Roundtable is all about sharing strategies):
http://www.smartmarriages.com/roundtables.html
If you have the luxury of a team, be sure at least a few of you attend the special Gary Chapman TRAINING INSTITUTE: #118 on Thursday July 8 where he'll emphasize church-based marriage ministries taught by marriage mentors. http://www.smartmarriages.com/institutes.html  and session #313 Friday Afternoon: "Establishing a Marriage Ministry in Your Church" - concentrated wisdom.

Amanda's 39th Birthday
   Miriam Grossman, MD
There is an epidemic of infertility in our country, an epidemic - along
with the heartache and expense that accompanies it - that is is 100%
avoidable. Yet health providers and sex educators fail to teach young
women the truths about fertility; they focus exclusively on the
prevention and termination of pregnancy. Important research and information
for mentor educators to take back to their communities.
________
P-4 Friday, July 9, 3:45pm
It Takes a Village
John Van Epp, PhD
We suffer the lowest marriage rate in history, the result of young adults postponing marriage
- often delaying so long that they never marry.  Our greatest challenge is reaching
these never-married/twenty-somethings with information that will help them understand
the benefits of marriage and that will give them the confidence that they can succeed at it.
While it's true that it takes strong marriages to create strong villages, the village is also responsible
for creating strong marriages – for regenerating itself. Before it's too late.  Mentor couples
are the front lines of this effort.
